In Memory of Peter Chatel
Our Lou’s Family recently experienced the loss of one of our own. Peter Chatel was a beloved manager at our Schaumburg restaurant, where he spent much of his 14-year Lou’s career along with Elk Grove.
We are deeply saddened by his loss and extend our condolences to everyone who knew and had the privilege of working with Peter. His impact on those around him cannot truly be measured.
A few people who were closest with Peter were kind enough to share a few words about him and what he meant to the people in his life and on his team. Those thoughts and reflections are shared below. “I don’t think Peter ever truly realized the impact he had on all of us at SB. He brought a sense of calm, teamwork, and just the right amount of silliness that made every shift better. He had a special way of bringing people together and took the time to genuinely get to know everyone in the store, especially in the PHC department.
Peter built lasting friendships with the servers and kitchen years ago during his first time managing at SB. When he came back, those same servers, kitchen staff and I were so happy to welcome him back. That speaks volumes about the kind of person he was.
He is already deeply missed by everyone he supported, mentored, accepted without judgment, and by those who simply needed someone to listen. He made people feel seen, valued, and like they belonged.
Peter was our go-to guy—the person you could always count on for guidance, encouragement, or even just a laugh when you needed one most.
He was Peter, being Peter. ❤️”

“It’s hard to put into words what Peter meant to all of us. He wasn’t just a manager, he was an amazing friend, a mentor, and someone who made Lou Malnati’s feel like family. He genuinely cared about every person he worked with and had an incredible gift for knowing exactly what to say when someone needed encouragement, support or simply a reason to smile. He had an infectious laugh, that you couldn’t help but laugh right along with him, even before you knew what was so funny…Sometimes, he wasn’t even funny….but the laugh made it worth it. He brought joy into every room he walked into and had a way of making even the toughest days feel a little lighter. Peter led with his heart and was unapologetically himself every single day. Whether you needed advice, or a listening ear or even someone to remind you that everything will be okay, Peter was always there.
His impact on Lous extends far beyond the years he worked here. It lives on in the people he mentored, the friendships he’s built, and the countless lives he’s touched with his compassion, humor, and genuine love for others. Peter is deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to inspire all of us who were fortunate enough to know him. – Leading with your heart is the greatest gift you can give.”
“Peter was much more than a coworker to me—Peter was a true friend, a best friend of mine. His kindness, sense of humor, and his unwavering ability to make work fun has made a lasting impact on everyone lucky enough to know him. He has had a huge impact on me.
We worked together for a few years…He always had a way of making even the most challenging days a little easier, whether through finding a moment during stressful times to crack a joke, his natural ability to make you feel special and important, or simply by being there alongside you when it mattered most.
After we were no longer working in the same store, and over the course of nearly a decade, we had a standing once a week hang out every Wednesday as a way to stay connected. Those hangouts meant so much to me. I will always be grateful for the conversations we shared, the lessons we learned together, the laughter we had, and the special friendship we built.
His passing has left a huge hole in my heart and his absence in my life is deeply felt, but his memory will be eternal. I will always think of the example he set: to treat others with respect and compassion, work with integrity, do things that bring you joy, and always appreciate the people around you.”

“I’ll always remember Peter as the manager who brought fun and laughter to every shift. He was always supportive to the staff while still holding them accountable to their jobs. When he was leaving Elk Grove and transferring to Schaumburg, I knew I was going to miss him. When he would come to pick up product he would always come early to visit me and the staff. He had a way about him that made things feel okay even when they weren’t.
I always knew he had my back and would do anything for the store. From decorating the store for the holidays and doing such a great job, to working additional days and hours while I was out on medical leave, Peter was always there for me and for Elk Grove. I am grateful for the chance to have him on my team, and he will never be forgotten!!”

“Peter and I worked together at Schaumburg. Once we both became managers, we went our separate ways, and I am so grateful we stayed in touch for 10 years. Peter was a great coworker and friend. If it was a night out with the crew, whether it was for fun or after a work event, if Peter was going, I knew it would be a great night. Peter will always be known for his contagious laugh and goofiness. I will truly miss him.”

“Honestly, there are so many good times and memories it’s hard to figure out what to write. But Peter was so much fun to be around. He would always brighten up the room with some goofy joke or with some ridiculous story that happened to him that week. I will forever cherish the time and the memories we were able to have together.”
